Symbian is the most widely used smartphone operating system, but it is losing ground to rivals like Apple, Research In Motion, Microsoft, and in recent months. Last year, Nokia, previously the largest shareholder in Symbian, has decided to revive its growth through the unification of software and release it with an open-source license as part of the base of the company.
